Biography

Roger de Montgommery, Comte de la Marche in right of his wife, alias le Poitevin alias Roger de Poitou. He is known by names which relate to his later life, except for Montgomery, which is a name associated with his father's origins in Normandy.

At the time of the Domesday survey (1086) he had been granted the land which later became Lancashire but had not yet taken possession of it. "Probably loyal to William II on his accession and a friend, he nonetheless fell with the rest of his family in 1102. He retired to Acquitaine, where by a series of unforeseen deaths his wife had become countess of La Marche."[1]

Shown in the FMG as the first son of Roger II de Montgommery and his first wife, Mabile d'Alençon, dau. of Guillaume "Talvas" Seigneur d'Alençon & his first wife Hildeburge. [2]

Roger de Montgomery "le Poitevin" was the fourth son of Roger II de Montgomery, Seigneur de Montgomery, Vicomte d'Hiémois, Earl of Shrewsbury and Sire d'Alençon, in right of his first wife, and Roger's mother Mabel Talvas. Mabile d'Alençon, was the daughter of Guillaume "Talvas" Sire d'Alençon and his first wife Hildeburge.[3]

There is speculation that Roger had a first wife with whom he had children:

  1. Sibylle;[4]

Roger married Almodis de la Marche, daughter of Audebert II Comte de la Marche and his wife, Ponce.[4] Roger and Almodis had children:

  1. Audebert III;[4]
  2. Boson;[4]
  3. Eudes;[4]
  4. Pontia;[4]

There is speculation that Hawise de Lancaster, the wife of William Peveril was also the daughter of Roger and Almodis.[4]

Roger and his brother Robert were banished from England in 1102.[3]

Adeline can't be Roger's child, but she is PP so she can't be disconnected.

Warning: Check the dates.

Montgomery-5961 and Montgomery-60 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate

Gilbert and Godith did have a son named Roger. See Fitz_Gilbert-14. Clearly a different person. I propose this one should be merged to Montgomery-60 (based on his wife and descendants), and split from the parents we currently give him. This family were "of Lancaster" for a generation, but never used it as a surname on-going.

There is a great historical fiction novel based on the life of Robert de Belleme available from Amazon.

It's called Belleme - The Norman Warrior.

It is a great read and is educational as well as entertaining
