He lived in Orange County, NC until 1769, then moved with his family to Washington County, VA. The area where they settled became Russell County, VA. Alexander and wife Martha deeded to Mary Montgomery, widow, June 3, 1769, 170 acres at the lower end of tract Mary Montgomery lives on. Land left to him by the Will of Alexander Montgomery, Sr.
Alexander's father died and left him 250 acres of land on Buck Creek in Amherst County Virginia. Alexander sold this land to his brother-in-law Robert Barnett, of Amherst County, Virginia.
Alexander and Martha Walker Montgomery moved their family to the Clinch River area of Southwest Virginia in 1771. They lived at the head of little Moccasin Creek where Alexander built a log cabin. He later received a land claim for 150 acres on Big Moccasin Creek dated 3 Dec.1782.
Alexander served in Moore's Fort on Clinch River (in Castlewood) during the Revolution. He was listed in the troops at Moore's Fort on 30 June 1777. He remained in Virginia for a few years after the Revolutionary War and perhaps he died there.
Alexander, along with his brothers-in-law William & Andrew Cowan witnessed the will of their father-in-law, John Walker, in Washington County, Virginia on 25 Sep. 1778. This will was proved in Washington County on 17 Dec. 1778 by oaths of Alexander Montgomery and William Cowan, Witnesses thereto.
After the Revolution, the family remained in Virginia for some time. No record has been found of disposition of the land of Alexander. His son, John Montgomery stated in his application for Revolutionary pension that, after the war was over, he returned to his father's home in Virginia, where he remained for some time. Therefore, we assume Alexander, remained in Virginia for a few years after the Revolutionary War, and perhaps he died there. It is not known when or where Alexander Montgomery, and his wife, Martha (Walker) Montgomery died.
One Alexander Montgomery served on a jury in Russell County, Virginia in September 1790 in the case of Champ Faris vs. Richard Davis. After this there was no record of an Alexander Montgomery in Russell County until the 1797 Tax List; it is thought this was Alexander III. It is probable the family went to Tennessee about 1791. John Montgomery, Jr. grandson of Alexander II, was born in Tennessee in 1792.
2. John Montgomery, was born 5 Aug. 1764, in Orange Co. North Carolina. He married (1) Susanna Porter, his first cousin, on 5 Aug. 1785. She died on 30 Nov. 1802. He married (2) Elizabeth Harris on 20 No. 1804. She was born about 1770 and died 14 Sept.1846.
3. Michael Montgomery was born in 1765 in Virginia. It is not known whom he married, when or where. He died, intestate, before October 1836 at which time an estate was opened for him in Parke County, Indiana.
4. Philip Montgomery, born about 1767, married Margery McClintock on 25 Nov. 1814, in Floyd Co. Kentucky. Tradition says that Philip and Joseph Montgomery were brothers of James and William Montgomery. It was also reported that Philip fought in the Revolution, but it seems more likely it was the War of 1812 (?).
5. Joseph Montgomery born about 1770 in Virginia. Tradition says that Joseph was in an Indian skirmish. The story goes that he and some comrades had been on a river and were trying to reach a fort on the bank. While running from the river to the fort, one of the comrades was wounded, and Joseph stopped to help him and he was himself wounded in the hip, however, they both managed to reach the fort.
6. James Montgomery, born about 1773 in Virginia, married Elizabeth Gibson in 1794. She was born 24 Sept. 1767 in York Co. Pennsylvania. They settled in Putnam Co. Indiana. James and Elizabeth had no children, but they raised two of William's daughters (Margaret and Eliza). The Methodist Episcopal Church now known as Brick Chapel, Putnam County, was organized at the home of James Montgomery. Elizabeth died 5 Sep. 1830 (date from Gibson Bible).
Paternal relationship is confirmed through Y-chromosome DNA testing. Alvin Douglas Montgomery Jr, FTDNA kit #450635, and his 5th cousin five times removed, Richard Montgomery, FTDNA kit #597329, match at a Genetic Distance of 3 on 111 markers thereby confirming their direct paternal lines back to their MRCA Alexander Montgomery.

Montgomery-17016 and Montgomery-3587 do not represent the same person because: The fathers are two different people. I think these two Alexander’s should be left as separate people for now.
I've been looking at the profiles for Montgomery-17016 and also Montgomery-3587. I'm not sure they should be merged. I think they are 2 separate Alexander Montgomery's with different parents. I think that Montgomery-3587 was the one married to Martha Walker Montgomery. There is a lot of information that shows this. So I want to withdraw my request for a merge. I think that Montgomery-17016 should be disconnected from Martha Walker Montgomery as a spouse and the two Alexanders should be left as separate people.
Montgomery-17016 and Montgomery-3587 appear to represent the same person because: These two clearly represent the same man, but the origins of 17016 appear to be wrong; there is far more support and sourcing on 3587 for the origins there. Spouses also need merging, as does son John.
Hi Beverly, how are you? May I ask you to post here, or, email at; [email address removed] the documents that supports Alexander Montgomery being from Argyl Township, Albany, New York? And, that Anna Sutherland was his wife? I have reason to believe that, that is not correct. But, I could be wrong. I just haven't been lucky to find documentation to support it.
Montgomery-3587 and Montgomery-3999 appear to represent the same person because: I believe Alexander Montgomery Jr and Alexander Montgomery II are the same person. Review and if you agree please merge.
