Biography

William Alexander Montgomery, (Will) the first child of James Thomas Montgomery and Nancy Jane Hufford was born in Goodson, Missouri in 1874. Will married Charlotte (Lottie) Thompson in Oklahoma in 1901. Charlotte, only 14 at the time, was born February 22, 1887. Family tradition says she was born in Alberta, Canada, but according to the census records, she was born in Kansas. She moved with her parents when the Indian Territory was opened for settlement and homesteading. William and Charlotte appear to be the first bunch to move west and didn't spend too much time in Oklahoma; because their first child was born in Pullman, Washington in 1904 and four more were born in St. Germaine, Douglas County, Washington between 1906 and 1912. (St Germaine was located north of Waterville on a 1909 map of the area, but now is just an abandoned post office). It appears that William and Charlotte moved their family to Alberta, Canada sometime after 1913, back to where she was born. It is likely that they settled in Innisfail, Alberta, about 80 miles north of Calgary, because we know that Charlotte died in Innisfail on July 26, 1958. William died November 19, 1958, less than four months later in Innisfail. William appears with two of his siblings in a photo included later in this volume.

All of the children of William and Charlotte married in Alberta and their children were born in several provinces of western Canada, including: Alberta, Manitoba and British Columbia. Two of the children married recent European immigrants. Whelma Lotus Montgomery married Thomas Thompson, who was born in Norway, and they had six children. Leo Donald Montgomery married Rose Buchanan in Caroline, Alberta, and they had eleven children. Douglas Earl Montgomery married Ethel May Bowers in Innisfail and they had four children. Florence June Montgomery, the fifth child of William and Charlotte married David Staben who was born in Germany, in Innisfail on December 15, 1930.
