Helen from the Greek Helene, feminine of Helenos.
In the 19th century, Helen was used only once for every Ellen in Britain. The name is linked to Helen of Troy, St. Helena, mother of Constantine the Great.
Helen Mitchell was born at Guthrie in either December 1816 or January 1817, her parents were Peter Mitchell, a farmer and Margaret Mitchell (Salmon).
She was age 20 when she married George McLaren on 17th June 1837 at Inverarity. They lived at Gallowfauld in the parish of Inverarity, and they had thirteen children;
1. Jane McLaren, born 17th May 1838 at Carterhaugh, Monikie. Baptised 3rd June 1838. She married James Constable on 12th December 1862. She was age 25, a farm servant living at Gallowfauld and a spinster. James was also age 25 and a farm servant was a bachelor from Monifieth. His parents were George a farmer, deceased & Helen Constable (Meffon). George Loudon (Minister) conducted the service at Inverarity. Witnesses Peter Smith and Elizabeth Peacock. Jane died on 25th January 1877 at 3:45am, age 39 years at Denfield, Monikie. Death was due to Brights disease and David Paton MB certified death. James Constable, farm servant registered the death on 26th January 1877 and she is buried at Monikie.
2. Margaret McLaren, born 30th August 1839, baptised at Gallowfauld on 22nd September 1839. Died 19th January 1842 age 2 ½ years, buried at Inverarity.
3. Anne McLaren, born 18th December 1841, baptised 2nd January 1842 at Inverarity.
4. James McLaren, born 2nd September 1843, baptised 24th September 1843 at Inverarity, died 15th January 1878, age 34 years, buried at Inverarity. The 1861 census for Little Lour Bothy listed him age 17, unmarried and a ploughman.
5. Peter McLaren, born 13th September 1845, baptised 27th September 1845, died 27th March 1914. Details on his own page.
6. George McLaren, born 17th July 1847, baptised 1st August 1847 at Gallowfauld.
7. David McLaren, born 7th December 1848, baptised 30th December 1848 at Gallowfauld. In the 1861 census he was age 12, a scholar living at Gallowfauld.
8. Thomas Smith McLaren, born 14th April 1850, baptised 2nd May 1850 at Gallowfauld. In the 1861 census, he was age 10, a scholar living at Gallowfauld. Thomas died at 9:00pm on 1st December 1873, age 23 years, he was single and employed as a maltster. He died at Gallowfauld, cause of death was phthisis and his brother William reported the death. Thomas is buried at Inverartity.
9. William McLaren, born 10th February 1852, baptised 1st of March 1852. His wife was known as Willimini and pre-deceased him He lived in one half of a cottage overlooking the ferry terminal at Newport-on-Tay (the chauffeur lived in the other half) and he worked all his life on the Berry estate. He was responsible for setting up the estate grounds and had a staff of 4 keepers, including ground at Tentsmuir. He had three sons all of who worked on the estate. One son was known as "McLaren on the Hill and lived at Chesterhill. William was a senior elder at St. Thomas Church, Newport. He is buried at Vicarsford Cemetery. William McLaren was highly thought of by the Berry family and Dr John Berry of Tayfield House had many a tale to tell of him during the conversation I had with him in 1996.
10. Charles McLaren, baptised 8th February 1854 at Inverarity. He was a cobbler in Dundee and later emigrated to Vancouver.
11. John McLaren, born 11th April 1856, 12:45pm at Gallowfauld, Inverarity. He lived and worked in Glasgow.
12. Helen McLaren, baptised 4th October 1857 at Inverarity. Her married name was Fairweather, she was widowed young with a family of six.
13. Unnamed son, died in infancy on 24th July 1860, buried at Inverarity.
Helen McLaren (Mitchell) died at 0:30am on 19th March 1875 at Gallowfauld, age 58 years 3 months. Cause of death; rupture of blood vessel. Her son William of Duchal, Kilmacolm, reported the death and she is buried at Inverarity Churchyard.
Helen & George are buried at Inverarity Churchyard, and the inscription reads;
"Erected by George McLaren, Gallowfauld in memory of his daughter Margaret who died 19th January 1842 age 2 ½ years, his son who died in infancy 24th July 1860, his son Thomas died 1st December 1873 age 23 years 9 months and Helen Mitchell his wife who died 19th March 1875 age 63. His daughter Jane, wife of James Constable died 25th January 1877 age 39 years interred at Monikie. His son James who died 15th January 1878 age 34 years."
