History of Humboldt County

"Mr. Miner Avas a native of Ohio, born February 23, 1827, and was a son of Allen Miner, a native of New York state. Though only seven years old during the war of 1812 the father was impressed into the service to the extent of taking a team and sleigh load of volunteer soldiers armed with muzzle-loaders and provided with powder horns to take part in the battle of Lundy's Lane, and was sent back home with the team. During his young manhood he drifted to Kentucky and thence to Ohio, practicing law in Cin- cinnati for a time. In Ohio he married a Miss Sophina Searles, and they had seven children : Jacob, Ichabod, David, Cyrus, Elizabeth, Lucinda and Amanda. For a number of years the family lived in Wisconsin."

Union Township History

"Near the village of Union, there was a large settlement of Wardell relatives, by blood or marriage. The relatives included William Aller, Sr., Jesse, Peter, John, William, Jr., and David Aller, James Moore, Josiah Cummings and four sons, and the families of Temple, Miner, Courtier, and Johnson.

The first organization for a township government took place in 1842 at the home of Charles McMillan. According to an account by David Johnson, who attended the meeting, it was at McMillen’s house that the town was named Union “from the fact of the entire unanimity of sentiment and action.”

Miner / Cummings / Temple / Andrews Family Connections

New York - Union, Wisconsin - Mitchell, Iowa - Ferndale, California is a migration route seen in a number of related families.

Allen Miner was married first to Sophia Temple in 1824 in Ohio. Sophia Temple had a possible relative named Almira Temple who married George J. Cummings in 1851 in Rock, Wisconsin.

George J. Cummings brother, Amos Cummings, helped plot out the town of Mitchell, Iowa.

Their other brother Lewis Jennings Cummings married Elizabeth T. Miner in Janesville, Rock, Wisconsin in 1853. Elizabeth was the daughter of Allen Miner and Sophia Temple.

Allen Miner's son, Leander Hoskins Miner, married Ella Elizabeth Scouten on the 4th of April, 1871 in Mitchell, Iowa. Ella's mother was named Almeda Andrews. Both Almeda and Ella have the mt dna haplogroup K1a4a1a3. There is a close match with their descendent Erik Granstrom and another persons who's maternal line ancestor is Mary Jane Andrews who was married to Isaac Buell and lived in Mitchell, Iowa in the 1850-1870s. The parents of Almeda Andres and Mary Jane Andrews are both unknown.

Children with Sophia Temple

The Temple Family Genealogy website lists seven children for Allen Miner and Sophia Temple: Jacob, Ichabod T., David, Elizabeth, Lucinda Amelia, Cyrus, Mary Amanda Miner.

On Allen Miner's Family Search profile there is also Daniel Miner born about 1834 in Ohio and one profile for Elizabeth Miner b. 1836 and one for Elizabeth T. Miner b. 1837 and d. 1918.

So the questions are was David and Daniel the same person, or were there two sons named David and Daniel. Or was there a Daniel Miner but with some other parents?

Were Elizabeth Miner b. 1836 and b. 1837 the same person or did the first die young and the second named after her sister?

Also both Cyrus and Mary are listed as being born in November, 1843. Were they twins or did one of them have a different birth date?

History of Union, WI

http://evansvillehistory.net/files/Union_Township_History.html

first marriage took place on March 28, 1841. Peter Aller married Eleanor Temple before a Justice of the Peace. Eleanor died in 1860, leaving Aller with two daughters to raise. He later married another Union township resident, Nancy M. Smith. Aller went on to hold many government positions, including Rock County Board Chairman and Superintendent of the County Poor Farm.

Families who arrived in the area were often related by blood or marriage. Thomas Wardell came to Union shortly in 1843 and settled on a farm three quarters of a mile northwest of Union on the Madison road. Thomas came from Indiana with his brother, Charles Wardell, who took the adjoining quarter section, just west of his Thomas’ land. Thomas Wardell was born August 9, 1815. After he settled on government land he purchased near Union, Rock County, Wis. He was elected as the first county superintendent of schools. In September, 1854, he sold out and moved away. His first wife was Esther Aller, daughter of William Aller, Sr., of Union and Evansville. She died in 1850 and Wardell married to Martha Thomas, the daughter of Frances Thomas of Cooksville. Seven of Mr. Wardell's thirteen children were born at Union.

Near the village of Union, there was a large settlement of Wardell relatives, by blood or marriage.

Once a township government was established, there were annual elections for Town officers. The candidates were chosen at a caucus. According to the Wisconsin State Constitution, only white males, 21 years of age, who were citizens of the United States could vote.

Notices were published to call the men together to select three supervisors, a town clerk, treasurer, highway commissioners, justices of the peace, constables, road masters, and a weights and measures sealer. Union township elected a “fence viewer” although earlier settlers had little time to put up fences and animals often wandered from farm to farm.

The men followed the patterns established for town organizations in the east and they did not shirk their duty to serve. Those who had arrived in 1839 worked alongside the later arrivals to perform the duties of the offices. The men were devoted to establishing good government, churches and school organizations. The names of the early office holders appeared over and over again as the years went by.

The first officers elected at the 1842 meeting included Supervisors, Ira Jones, David R. Bent, and Allen Miner; Clerk, John T. Baker; Assessors, John F. Sale, David Johnson and David R. Bent; Commissioners of Highway were William Webb, Isaac Andrus and Washington Higday; School Commissioners were Levi Leonard, Isaac Andrus and Lemuel Warren. John Griffith served as Treasurer and collectors included Hamilton Higday and Adam W. Uline. Elected to the “Fence Viewers” office were Ira Jones, David R. Bent and Allen Miner. Sealer of Weights and Measures was Joseph Osborn and Overseer of Road was Charles McMillan.

Rapid growth characterized the new territory. The Federal Census of 1840 listed 16 families. Just five years later, the Wisconsin territorial census recorded 127 families, an increase of 100 families within five years.

Public transportation was by stagecoach from Janesville and Madison. The coaches brought people and mail into Union township in the early days. There was a daily stage (except Sunday) from Janesville to Madison. The stage stopped at the village of Union, before heading north into Dane County and the next stop, Rutland.

Farmers had to depend on wagons that they owned or borrowed from a neighbor to deliver their produce to market. Transporting goods to market was a great hardship for the early settlers.

Landowners were expected to repair the roads adjacent to their property, but there was no machinery to smooth and repair the roads. Poor weather and heavy traffic on the dirt roads kept them in constant need of repair.

We clip the following account of the death of Al Miner, well and favorably known to a great portion of our readers, from the Press of the 5th inst.

Allen Miner died at Petrotie, California, January 8, 1880, at 3 o'clock p.m., aged 72 years, 8 months and 24 days. Mr. Miner was one of the early settlers of this county, (Mitchell) and lived for many years at Mitchell, and was well known to all the early settlers in this county, and was always recognized as a good citizen, a kind and obliging neighbor and a steadfast friend. He was a member of the M.E. church, and did much in the early days to build up the church interests in the early settlement of this section. He went to California many years since to reside with his children who had made a home on the Pacific coast. We knew him intimately, and to know him was to honor and respect the man. Peace to his ashes.

Is this our Allen Miner who is mentioned? I was trying to search for anything related to Allen Miner in the California gold rush.

Record 192 of 1725

System Number: 78853

Title: William P Warren family correspondence, 1850-1852

Filed in: SMCII : BOX 11 : FOLDER 8

Notes: William's letter home is a capsule summary of his overland journey to California. He describes setting out from St. Joseph after an overturned wagon and broken wheel caused several days of delay. He talks of sickness on the trail and recuperating in Salt Lake City where he stayed with relatives, Aunt Abigal and Uncle Williams. There is mention of killing a buffalo and of trouble with Indians, including a sentry ambushed while on guard. Short rations result in William, his uncle Cody and Allen Miner leaving John Warren and the rest of the company to push on ahead. All arrive safely in Hangtown and William concludes the letter as he prepares to settle in to winter quarters with his Uncle John. The accompanying letters are from William's family back in Illinois, including his father, sister, aunt and cousin. They bring him up to date on family and friends, making much mention of people leaving for and returning from the California gold fields.

Subjects: 1. Warren, William P., 1828-1914 -- Correspondence. 2. Overland journeys to the Pacific. 3. California $x Gold discoveries. 4. Frontier and pioneer life -- Illinois -- La Salle County. 5. Warren, William P., 1828-1914. 6. Warren, Nathan, 1806-1886. 7. Warriner, Fanny. 8. Hoar, Elizabeth. 9. Warren, Lucy. Links: Permalink

also here is the wikitree page for the William P. Warren who is mentioned, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Warren-17665

though it is probably more likely related to the Allen Breed Miner family as they were in the same Illiniois area as Warren. Allen Breed Miner (1793 - 1882) https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miner-1021

Does his ancestry go back to Thomas Miner (R-M269) of Connecticut?

On a Ancestry.com Family Tree it has his father as David Miner Jr (1757-1844) and Unknown Searls as his mother.

Though I think that may be an incorrect match. As I believe that the father David Miner Jr born in 1757 matches this profile already in WikiTree: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miner-1022

Who has a son listed as Allen Breed Miner (1793 - 1882) who seems to be a separate person then the Allen Miner (1804 - 1880) who is my ancestor and is in this profile Miner-1707.

Though several of the locations do seem similar, they may all be part of the larger Miner family.

I also found Allen Breed Miner in Geni, and he has a wife and children listed that are different then my Allen Miner. Here is the Geni Link: https://www.geni.com/people/Allen-Miner/6000000010388906931

So just researched Allen Miner and Dorthy Dyer. Most likely part of the same larger Miner family but not this Allen Miner's parents.

Found this document at the wikitree page of Allen Miner, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miner-1515

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~streeter/genealogy/miner.pdf

I think that they had two sons named Allen. One born in in 1799 died as an infant. The other born 20 April, 1811 married Lydia Fauver.

Has his parents listed as Allen Miner, 1771-1859 and Dorthy Dyer, 1774-1846.

So was researching more today on this family line. I think the Allen Minor, son of Elijah is a separate person then my ancestor Allen Minor. A cousin most likely.

Because the families don't match but and also because of the birth date and location for Allen. My Allen was born in April, this other one in October.

There is that one comment which made me think that they were the same person, saying that he was perhaps married to Sophina Temple, but I think that is wrong.

Becuase the son of Elijah married Nancy P Hall in Maine and had eight children together in Maine.

Which would make him a match for this family search page: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/29SH-V1G

but the wives and children do not match up between the two family search profiles:

Needs further research.

The profile for Allen B. Miner, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Miner-1021

May be associated with him. At first I thought it could be his father, but I think he just is part of the larger related Miner family because the birth years seem off when comparing the two, older Allen B. Miner born 17 Apr 1793 and his the younger Allen born 14 Apr 1804.
