Biography

Velma (Mills) McCaleb was born in Appalachia, in Alabama.

Velma Louise Mills was born on a farm in Glen Allen, Alabama on October 14, 1918 , the youngest child of William Madison "Will" Mills and Martha Loutellie "Tellie" Mills^[1]. When she was in the eighth grade, she had to leave school to care for her mother, who was in failing health.

On October 16, 1938 she married Carlos K. McCaleb in Marion County, Alabama.^[4][5].

NOTE: When the census taker stopped by the McCaleb home, Carlos was the only one there. Velma had gone with her sister Zelma to see their father in Brilliant and was going to return later in the day. Carlos told the census taker that Velma was 31, just for a laugh. He told me about it in 1969. He said that from that day on, my mother was always older than him. He was still laughing about it!

Carlos took a job as a coal miner for a relatively new mine in Jefferson County, Alabama, called Concord Mine. The couple was not sure where they wanted to live, so they rented one side of a duplex in Fairfield, Alabama. Velma was keeping house.

She was a wonderful housewife and mother to their only child, a daughter. Velma passed away on February 13, 1996.^[8] She was laid to rest beside Carlos in West Alabama Memorial Gardens, Gu-Win, Marion County, Alabama.^[9]
