He came to the United States by sail boat in 1851. It took three months to make the crossing. They landed at New Orleans, Louisiana and then went up the Mississippi River by steamer to Davenport, Iowa. The family lived in or near Davenport for about two years and daughter, Alma, was born there. In 1853, the family moved to St. Marys in Mills County, Iowa, on the Missouri River across from Bellevue, Nebraska. The trip from Davenport to St. Marys was made by prarie schooner. Unkas, Geroge, his twin sister Martha, and Herman were born at St. Marys. Martha also passed away at St. Marys the same year she was born.
