Biography

John was born in Iowa in 1911, the son of John McManus and Mary McEvoy.^[1] He married Esther Fellegi in California in 1939.^[2] John passed away in California in 1973^[3][4] and is buried in Victorville, California.^[5]

Former head of Riverside B. of A. dies

Services were held yesterday morning in Santa Barbara for John F. McManus, former vice president and manager of Bank of America’s Riverside main office, who died Saturday.

McManus, 62, had lived in Santa Barbara with his wife, Esther, since his retirement in 1971. He underwent open heart surgery earlier this year, and his death was attributed to a recurrence of heart trouble.

A native of Iowa, McManus was a graduate of Creighton University and Van Sant School of Business, both in Omaha. Neb.

He joined Bank of America in 1937 after four years with Douglas County Bank of Omaha. He worked in the bank’s Los Angeles offices until coming to Riverside as operations officer in 1943.

He was named manager of the Victorville branch in 1950 and returned to Riverside in 1955.

A co-founder of the Riverside-San Bernardino Better Business Bureau, McManus was also past president of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Riverside Association, the board of directors of Knollwood Hospital and the Farmers Fair of Hemet.

He was past treasurer of the United Fund and the American Red Cross, a director of the Riverside Lions Club, and served on the Armed Forces Committee at March Air Force Base.

He is survived by his wife, of Santa Barbara; sons, John of Santa Barbara and Barry of Malibu; daughters, Ann Krinsky of Anaheim, Mary Maloy of San Diego and Julie McManus of Santa Barbara; one grandchild and sisters, Mary McManus of Iowa and Eleanor Lorenz of Sacramento.

Funeral services were held at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Santa Barbara and graveside services in Victor Valley Cemetery, Victorville.
