Biography

Esther was born in Illinois in 1916, the daughter of Emil Fellegi and Elizabeth G. Jilly.^[1] She married John F. McManus in California in 1939.^[2] Ester passed away in California in 2007^[3][4] and is buried in Victorville, California.^[5]

Obituary Notice

Esther McManus passed from this life on Monday, August 27 after 91 very active years. She was an adored spouse (John McManus died in 1973) and loving mother of five children : John McManus (Gloria) of Santa Barbara, Barry McManus of Malibu, Anne Krinsky (Marvin) of Lake Forest, Mary Fogarty (Michael) of San Diego and Julie Baird (Bruce) of Petaluma. (A sixth child, Brian, her first born, died in 1951.) She was also grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of two.

No one could say that Esther led a dull life. After traveling in a Model T from her Chicago birthplace to Los Angeles in 1930 with her Hungarian born parents and siblings, she became active in Hollywood events and Hungarian cultural circles (her father, Emil, was a noted portrait and landscape artist), and worked with her sister, Margit Fellegi (head designer for Cole of California) in the creation and promotion of Cole bathing suits.

She and John, a banker from Adair, Iowa, were married in Los Angeles in 1939 and moved to Victorville and, later, Riverside, before retiring from the Bank of America and moving to Santa Barbara in 1971, where she enjoyed working in the gift shop of the Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel and helping her son John and daughter-in-law Gloria in the start-up years of Magellan's Travel Supplies.

Esther was active in leadership roles in community and church organizations but asked that instead of listing her many accomplishments, she simply be described as "a mother who loved her kids" when the time came to write this notice.

A vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM on Friday evening, August 31, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito, a funeral Mass will be celebrated there on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM, followed by private internment in Victorville, California.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in Esther's name to Catholic Charities of Santa Barbara or the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation. Arrangements by Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels.
