Biography

Scottish flag
Robert McEwin was born in Scotland.
Robert McEwin is a member of Clan_MacEwen.
Robert McEwin was an Assisted Immigrant to Victoria.

Robert was born in 1822. He was the son of John Mcewen (abt.1791-1855) and Margaret Hester (Daniel) McEwin (1795-1855). He passed away in 1900.

Mr. Robert McEwin, whose death occurred at Prospect on November 13 in his 80th year, was a native of Scotland. He was a brother of the late Mr. George McEwin, of Glen Ewin. He arrived in Melbourne early in the thirties, and, with his father and brothers, carried on an extensive nursery on the banks of the Yarra. The Yarra floods destroyed the whole of the property early in the forties. He then tried his fortune on the Bendigo gold diggings, where he was fairly successful. He next began business in a store in Melbourne. In 1851 Mr. McEwin came to South Australia to visit his brother George at Glen Ewin, who induced him to buy the Summer Hill property, near Golden Grove. In 1852 he married Miss Cecilia Lyell, of Melbourne, by whom he had six sons and four daughters—Mr Robert Kirk, near Golden Grove ; Mrs A. V. Smith, Willow Pond, Gladstone; Mrs. Joseph Paterson. Gawler: Mr. John McEwin, Mundijong. Western Australia: Mr. A. L. McEwin, Brinkworth; Mrs R. W. McEwin, Salem, Houghton: Mr. R. D. McEwin, Warner Town; Mr. G. L. McEwin, Summer Hill: Mr. D. L. McEwin, Warner Town; Mr. James McEwin, Summer Hill.
Mrs. MEwin died in 1883, and in 1886 Mr. McEwin married a daughter of the late Mr. John Smart of Golden Grove. Mr. McEwin resided at Summer Hill till 1896, when he removed to Prospect. He was a zealous worker in connection with local matters at Golden Grove, and a liberal supporter of the Golden Grove Presbyterian church.
