Biography

Joseph Theodore McCool was born on or about 16 Feb 1854 in Pope County, Illinois. He was the son of Jesse McCool and Matilda Ann (Sellars) McCool (1821 - about 1871).

In the 1860 census Joseph (age 7) was in Township 13 S Range 5 E, Pope, Illinois, United States.[1]

Joseph's mother died about 1871; his father remarried but had no additional children.

Joseph T McCool (age 23) married a very young Mary Wilson Leslie (age 14; 1862 - about 1900) on or about 14 January 1877 in Pope, Illinois, United States.[3] Most of their children were born after 1880; we get some of their names from the 1900 Census (see Research Notes below). They included:

  3. Martha Amanda McCool (1882-1886) - child death

In the 1880 census Theodore McCool (age 27), Farmer, was the married head of household in Webster Number 5 Precinct, Pope, Illinois, United States.[4] He appears two households away from his father, Jesse, step-mother Huldy, and step-brother. He does not provide information about the birth location of his parents, nor does his father (who states he was born in Illinois as expected).

Joseph Theodore McCool was enumerated in a non-population Agriculture schedule on 8 July 1880 in Webster, Pope, Illinois.[5] This all but confirms that the "Theodore McCool" shown in the 1880 population schedule in Webster is in fact "Joseph Theodore McCool."

Joseph apparently passed away between late 1897 and early 1900 as he had a two year old daughter in the 1900 Census and his wife Mary was listed as widowed (see Census record in Research Notes).

Theodore's son McCool was born on 18 June 1878 in Pope, Illinois, United States.[6]

Theodore's daughter McCoole was born on 4 June 1880 in Pope, Illinois, United States.[7]

Joseph's daughter Martha Arminda McCool was born on 24 January 1882 in Pope, Illinois, United States.[8]

Theodore's son Harry M McCool married Irene M. Stevens in 1922 in Polk, Iowa, United States.[9]

Theodore's son Jesse T McCool married Stella Snyder on 29 May 1923 in East Saint Louis, St. Clair, Illinois, United States.[10]

His son Harrison Marvin Mc Cool died in 1965 in Shelby, Shelby, Iowa, United States.[11]

In the 1900 census wife Mary (age 37) was the widowed head of household in Benton Precinct, Massac, Illinois, United States.[12] Presumed son Harrison did not appear in this record.
