Private Alfred McCaleb served in the United States Civil War.

Alfred Cowan McCaleb was born on 18 May 1827 in Fayette County, Alabama, United States. His parents were Hugh White (McKillip) McCaleb (~1780 - ~1845) and Elizabeth (Holbrook) McCaleb (~1785 - 1870).

In 1840, Hugh's farm is shown to be in Fayette County, Alabama.[2] Fayette County was formed from Marion County and several other counties in 1824,[3] so I cannot account for the discrepancy.

In 1860, Alfred and Mary Ann are living in the Middle Division of Fayette County, Alabama.[4] His occupation is listed as farmer. Household members listed were:

Alfred enlisted in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War and served in rank of Private in Company D, 3rd Confederate Calvary.[5] Our late family historian, Fred McCaleb, wrote a story about Alfred and his brother, William Franklin. They were involved in the Battle for Atlanta and survived, but their horses did not. They walked from Atlanta, all the way home to Fayette County, Alabama. Today by road, it is 224 miles. They ate ripe corn from fields they passed by on the way.[6]

In 1880, Alfred is a widower, still living in Fayette County, Alabama on his farm.[7] Mary Ann may have died in childbirth or shortly afterwards when Daniel was born. Family members listed on the Census were:
