Biography

William Neil McCaleb was born in 1715 in Inverness, Scotland. He is supposed to have been a Jacobite supporter and fought at Culloden alongside the McDonalds of Keppoch (of which the McCalebs were a sept) in 1745.

He married Sarah McAlpin (said to have been the daughter of a chieftain) around the time of the 1745 rising. Following the defeat of the Jacobite side, he and his three brothers left Scotland for America in 1746, traveling via Dublin and arriving in Charleston, SC. They moved inland from there, though it is not clear if they settled in what is now North or South Carolina, though they were said to have settled with other Jacobite-supporting Scots exiles.

A "Neil McKillop" appears on the rolls of Adam Alexander's militia company in 1766 for an Indian campaign.

William and Sarah (McAlpin) McCaleb had four children:

William McCaleb (b. 1747, d. 1813), m. Ann Mackey. Served as Captain in South Carolina militia cavalry during the Revolutionary War.

James McCaleb (b. 1744, d. 1820), m. Sarah (Unknown). Served in Revolutionary War.

Archibald McCaleb (b. 1772?, d. 1813), m. Mary Margaret "Polly" Gardner. Settled Campbell's Station, TN; killed during Indian expedition at Turkey Creek, TN.

William McCaleb died in 1775 in the Pendleton District, SC.
