Dennis was born in 1892. He was the son of Somerset Maxwell and Florence Taylour. He passed away on 16 Jan 1970.

He married Theodora Mary Hickling, daughter of Arthur Hickling, on 11 July 1923.

He was educated at Royal Naval College, Osborne, Isle of Wight, England, at Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Devon, at Royal Naval Engineering College, Keyham, England, Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London, EnglandG. He gained the rank of Vice-Admiral. He was appointed Fellow, Institution of Mechanical Engineers (F.I.Mech.E.) He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1945. He held the office of Aide-de-Camp to HM King George VI between 1945 and 1946. He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1948. He was Engineer-in-Chief of the Fleet between 1950 and 1953. He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1952. He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.
