Biography

John Matthews was born in Staffordshire, England.

John was born in 1843 and baptised on 21 November in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. Hanley is now part of the city of Stoke on Trent. He was the son of Joseph Matthews and Jane Hopkins. His place of birth may have been Keele, as recorded in some censuses.

John began and ended his working life as a blacksmith. In between he worked as an unskilled labourer in iron foundries. He married Ann Lear, daughter of Elijah Lear and Sarah Adams of Baddeley Edge, on 8 April 1864 at St Luke's Church in Hanley.

John died in 1908. His death was registered in Stoke on Trent.
