William Matthews was born in Staffordshire, England.
William was born in 1864 in Tunstall and baptised on 6 May 1866 in Tunstall Court, Staffordshire, England. He was the son of John Matthews and Mary Ann Lear.
On 2 February 1890 William married Fanny Eady at St Mary's Church in Tunstall, Staffordshire. William had a variety of jobs: a general labourer in an iron foundry, a gas stoker and a porter on the railway. By 1921, he was retired.
William and Fanny had at least eight children between 1890 and 1910, all born in Burslem, one of the pottery villages that were brought together to create the city of Stoke on Trent.
William passed away in the last quarter of 1950 in Stoke. He was 87. It isn't known where or when Fanny died.
