Biography

Eliza married Sterling Cocke in Grainger County before 1815.[1] She died before 15 July 1818, when Sterling married Caroline Frances Jones.[2]

They had one child: William Micahel Cocke, born in Grainger County on 16 July 1815.[3]

Research Notes

Estimated Birth Year: Assuming she was at least 14 when she married, Eliza was born before 1800.

Burial: Her husband's Find a Grave memorial says that "Eliza is presumably buried with her father, Michael Massengill, a Revolutionary War hero."[4] His DAR record does not list her, but that only means that none of her descendants were members of the DAR with her father as their Patriot Ancestor.[5]

There is no indication on her father's memorial that Eliza is buried in the same cemetery.[6]

Possible Duplicate Profile: Elizabeth T. Massengill (abt.1796-abt.1817), which appears to conflate the daughter of Henry and the daughter of Henry's son Michael. Following is from a comment I posted to Massengill-40 on 11 August 2024. ~ ls

...William Michael Cocke, son of Sterling Cocke & Eliza T. Missengill. Sterling's Find a Grave memorial says that "Eliza is presumably buried with her father, Michael Massengill, a Revolutionary War hero."
This profile (Massengill-40) cites a Massengill book that appears to be citing a "Henry Massingaill" monument in saying that Elizabeth m (1) Timothy (2) Isaac Taylor is the daughter of Henry's son Michael, but it looks like that information is actually about Henry's daughter/Michael's sister Elizabeth. And she has a profile. The Eliza T. Massengill who married Sterling Cocke in 1814 also has a profile.
I believe this profile conflates the aunt/niece. Which would you prefer she be?

From Massengill-40's profile text about Michael (which is footnoted with the Massengill book referenced in the comment):

Michael Massengill 1756-1853, married Dorcas Stone. Enlisted in the Revolutionary Army at the age of 20, and participated in the Battles of Musgrove Mill (18 Aug, 1780), Blackstock (20 Nov 1780), and King’s Mtn (7 Oct 1780) . A member of the Regulator’s in Washington County in 1778. One of the Founder’s of Granger County and one of the early Justice’s of the County Court.[7]
Note: Michael is not found on the compilation of those known to have been at the battle of King's Mountain[8] and his pension application does not mention King's Mountain (it mentions only two battles, Musgrove Mill and Blackstock).[9]
