First marriage to Eliza T. Massengill in Grainger County, Tennessee before 1815.[5] She died before 15 July 1818, when Sterling married Caroline Frances Jones.

Capt. Sterling Cocke is buried in Etter Cemetery in Mooresburg. His tombstone indicates that he was a Freemason.[3]
