Elizabeth Cowen died August 29, 1901, preceded by her husband, Henry P. Cowen, 5 months and 4 days. She was born November 27, 1827, 73 years, 8 months and 21 days old. She was a true and faithful member of the Baptist church for fifty years and lived in peace and harmony with her husband for over half a century. To them were born 10 children. The have left 9 children, 33 grand-children and 7 great grand-children. Sister Cowen was one among the best women, a true companion, a loving and faithful mother. Her walk and talk were such as adorn the Christian life. Their descendants generally seem inclined to walk in the footsteps of the faithful old saints who have gone over the river of Death. The funeral services were conducted by Elder L. J. Tatum. [1]
Note: 1900 census states mother of 10 children - 9 living no record of 10th child as of 3/12/1990.
Event
February 8, 1900, Golden wedding anniversary.[7]Article.
Elizabeth remembered. Data: Text: Elsie Cowen(My husband's Aunt, Dau of Peter Marion and Nancy Luella Carley Cowen) told me she remembered seeing Elizabeth's spinning wheel and pipe. (Yes, some women smoked pipes in those days! I have seen mention of that both in Kentucky and in the Ozarks.)[8]
Death

August 29, 1901. (Old Cemetery Book, 1990)(Revised Cem Book, 2004)[10]
August 29, 1901. (Hickory Co., Index, VII, No. 8, August 29, 1901)(Typed obit from Jinny Sharp)[11]
Notes for Elizabeth, some confusion:
The obituary says she d. Aug 29. 73 years, 8 month, 21 days. Date calculator on FTM, using the birth date we have of Nov 27, 1827 makes her death date Aug 17, 1901. Newspaper had to get obit in awfully fast to have it published same day. (Her husband Henry died March 4, 1901, obit in Hickory Co. Index, Vol XVI No. 37, March 21, 1901. Seven (7) days to the posting of the obit.)
Obviously cemetery books are not correct. Wilson's date may have been the closest!
