Biography

Thomas Marshall was born in the Colony of Victoria (1851-1900)

Thomas Mulcaster Marshall was born around 1863 in the Port Town of Geelong, located at the eastern end of Corio Bay (the smaller western portion of Port Phillip Bay) and on the left bank of Barwon River, about 65 km (40 mi) southwest of the capital City of Melbourne, Colony of Victoria, Australia (birthplace taken from his Marriage Certificate). He was the son of Thomas Marshall and Elizabeth Mary Landseer. On the 14 May 1888, Thomas was farming a substantial acreage near the Town of Eumungerie, in the County of Ewenmar, between the Macquarie River on the west, and the Castlereagh River on the east, 423 kilometres (263 mi) north west of the state capital Sydney and 37 kilometres (23 mi) north of the Town of Dubbo, in the Colony of New South Wales, Australia[1]. He also farmed at Wylgamere Station, in the Town of Momoa, directly across the Murray River from the larger town of Echuca in the neighbouring state of Victoria, to which it is connected by a bridge, in the Colony of New South Wales, Australia.

At around the age of 44, Thomas, a Grazier, married Ellen Eliza Pinnigerl (44) on the 29 January 1907 at her parents' residence, "Cherhill", Newtown, in the Town of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. Both Ellen and Thomas were single at the time of the marriage and were married by Licence by the Reverend Samuel Adam according to the Methodist Church rites. Witnesses to the nuptials were Fannie Lawrence Hamilton (Barber) and Alice May (Pinniger)[2]. I don't believe the couple had any children born to them.

MARRIAGE. MARSHALL—PINNIGER.—On the 29th January at "Cherhill", Newtown, by the Rev. S. Adam, Thomas Mulcaster Marshall, "Wylgamere", Ouyen, N. S. Wales. to Nellie, second daughter of the late Henry Pinniger. Newtown Geelong[3]

However, by 1919, the couple had retired from farming and were living at "Wylgamere", Hopetoun Street, in Canterbury, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[4]. Thomas and Ellen had moved by 1937 to 18 Braeside Avenue, in Burwood, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where they passed away[5].

At the age of 81, Thomas passed away on the 13 April 1944, at his home at 18 Braeside Avenue, in Burwood, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[6]. His burial took place in the Church of England portion, Section 5, grave number 375 (with his wife Ellen) of the Burwood Cemetery, Burwood Highway, Burwood, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[7]. The inscription on the gravestone reads:--MARSHALL. In Memory of ELLEN ELIZA MARSHALL Died Jan. 22, 1943 And Her Beloved Husband THOMAS MULCASTER MARSHALL, Died April 13, 1944[8]

DEATHS. MARSHALL.—On April 13 (suddenly), Thomas Mulcaster Marshall, of 18 Braeside avenue, Burwood, beloved husband of the late Ellen Eliza, aged 81 years, late of Wylgamere Station, New South Wales.[9]
