Biography

Marie Josephe Marechal was likely born on or before her baptismal date 28 Sep 1745 to Nicolas Marechal and Marie Jeanne Illeret[1], a founding family of what is now St. Louis, MIssouri, United States of America[2]. She was likely baptized at Cahokia, Pays des Illinois, La Louisiane française.[1]

She likely married Joseph Calvé[3] in the early 1760s at Fort de Chartres, Pays des Ilinois, Canada, Nouvelle-France[4].

About 1765 she moved with her husband Joseph and their family at the time to San Luis, Luisiana, Nueva España, where Joseph received a concession of the east 1/2 of Lot 61 on 30 Apr 1766.[5]

Their known children are Joseph Calvet, Jr.[6][4], Marie Therese Calvet[7][4], Victoire Calvé[8][9][4], Marie Josephe Calvé[10][11][12][4], Marie Jeanne Calvét[13], Marie Angélique Calvet[14], Marie Reine Calvet[15][16], Marie Francoise Calvet[17][18][4], and Antoine Calvet[19][4].

Marie Josephe Marechal died on 1 Jul 1791 at San Luis.[3] She was buried at Basilica of St. Louis, King of France (Old Cathedral) Cemetery on 2 Jul 1791.[3]

Research Notes

She is referred to as "Theresa" on page 3 of "A History of Missouri, from the earliest explorations and settlements until the admission of the state into the union, Volume 2," but the author Houck doesn't cite any sources for that information.[4] All of the contemporary baptismal, marriage, and burial record sources found to date identify her name as variations of Marie Josephe Marechal.[8][10][13][14][15][17][7][19][9][11][3][6][16][18][12]

Her Find A Grave memorial lists Hyacinth Calvet, died 1799, as one of their children, but no sources are cited for that information.[2] No source for this information has been found to date.

Hi all,

I'm planning to remove the name "Therese" from the Middle Name field of Marie Josephe's profile. It's my understanding that it's unlikely that there was a concept of "middle name" in that area at that time, and while Houck in his 1908 History of Missouri Vol 2 referred to her as "Theresa", it appears that there are no contemporary sources that support that she was ever referred to as "Therese" or "Theresa" in her time. It's possible that Houck confused Marie Josephe with her daughter Marie Therese. I plan to leave the associated existing Research Note in the profile for future reference. Please let me know if you disagree.

I'll be adding the citations and abstracts for the sources that I've found to date which provide evidence of the relationships between Marie Josephe Marechal/Joseph Calvé and their children. Also it appears that much of the content of the biography section of this profile has been copied verbatim from the text on her Find A Grave memorial. I had originally copied/pasted content from other sites into some of the profiles that I've created/edited, and have been updating such content as I run across it, since it conflicts with WikiTree's policy on Copying Text. So I'm also working to abstract the memorial info and to write an original bio for this profile which I'll use to replace the current bio in the profile.
