Services for retired Chief Master Sergeant Claude F. Maple, 71, of Kernville and a former Lompoc resident, were held at 10 a.m. on July 26, 2004 at the chapel of Starbuck-Lind Mortuary with Rev. Jim Butler of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial, with military honors, followed at Lompoc Cemetery.

Claude was born in Quincy, Ill. on April 16, 1933 to John and Clara Keil Maple. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he served for 28 years with the U.S. Air Force. Starting his career as an aircraft mechanic, he served in the 1st Strategic Air Command and retired in 1979 at Vandenberg Air Force Base as Base Sergeant Major. He worked three years for Martin-Marietta before he and his wife moved to Kernville where they owned and operated McCambridge Lodge. He retired in the fall of 2003 due to his health. Claude enjoyed adding additions to buildings and was most accomplished in repairing mechanical systems.

He died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.

He was preceded in death by one sister, two brothers and his parents. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Keetha; daughter Julie and son-in-law Michael Tremblay of Lompoc; sons and daughters-in-law Douglas and Amanda Maple of State College, Penn., Bruce and Seema Maple of Houston, Texas; brothers and sisters-in-law Ronald and Juanita Maple of Payson, Ill., Marion and Gerri Maple of Loveland, Colo.; granchildren, Nathan, Louise, Joseph, Emily, Peter and Ellen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
