Walter Mantell was the second son of Sir Walter Mantell, who lived at Nether Heyford in Northamptonshire, and his wife Margaret Wood.
In about 1547 he married Jane Hales and in about 1550 his father-in-law Sir James Hales became his stepfather by marrying his widowed mother.
He and Jane had four children before his execution for treason.
