Jane Hales was born about 1525, the daughter of Sir James Hales and his first wife Mary Hales.
About 1547 she married Walter Mantell and in about 1550 her mother-in-law Margaret Wood became her stepmother by marrying her widowed father.
She had four children with Walter before his execution for treason. She then married Christopher Carlell, who lived at Monks Horton.
