Biography

Birth and Parents

William was the son of John Mallory and his first wife Margaret Thwaites.[1][2] He was said to be 30 in 1528, according to the Inquisition Post Mortem for his father held on 20 October 1528, pointing to a birth year of about 1498. He was his father's main heir.[3][4][5] He was probably born in Yorkshire, where his father had lands.

Marriage and Children

William married Jane Norton, daughter of John Norton[1][2] and Margaret Warde.[3][4] They had ten children:

Life

In May 1537 William (referred to as "Sir" William) was among those commissioned to inquire into treasonous activities in Yorkshire.[6]

Official records of the reign of Henry VIII show him involved in 1538[7] and 1542[8] in interrogating suspect persons.

Lands

William inherited Studley Manor and Hutton Conyers, Yorkshire from his father.[5] His Inquisition Post Mortem recorded lands in Yorkshire at Studley Magna, Ripon, Hutton Conyers, Brompton, Linton in Craven and Nunwick.[5]

Death

William died on 27 April 1547,[4] quite likely in Yorkshire where his lands were. His Inquisition Post Mortem was held on 24 September 1547, and named his heir as his son Christopher, aged 22 and more.[5]

Magna Carta Project

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta project by Michael Cayley on 31 Mach 2022.
William Mallory is in badged trails (reviewed/approved by the Magna Carta Project) from the Batte Gateway Ancestors (Henry and Thomas) and the Mallory Gateways (Roger and Thomas) to Magna Carta Surety Barons Saher de Quincy, Robert de Vere, William d'Aubigny, Robert de Ros and Robert FitzWalter. This profile also appears in a second Richardson-documented trail from the Batte and Mallory Gateways to Saher de Quincy (vol. III, pages 114-123 MALLORY) that was badged by the project in October 2022. All these trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Henry Batte's profile and in the Magna Carta Trails section of Roger Mallory's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Verified this profile as being on a project-approved trail (from Batte-33 to Quincy or de Vere, following "Magna Carta badged" profiles from Batte-33 to both surety barons). The project account for the Magna Carta Project will be added as a manager later this month to meet WikiTree guidelines (see Help:Project-Managed_Profiles). Give me a holler if you have any questions. ~ Liz, Magna Carta project member

Mallory-1150 and Mallory-77 appear to represent the same person because: Similar date of birth, same date he died, relationships are the same. Please merge

fyi - This Mallory is already badged, part of a reviewed Magna Carta trail to the Battes - Henry, Thomas, and William - that includes this William's son William & grandson Thomas.

Yes Joan! That's the order Bree has connected. From this William m Jane Norton to William & Ursala (that William b 1530/1 by age at ipm of his brother) to John b c1556 m Anna Eure to William Mallory b before Dec. 1577, m Alice Bellingham in 1599 & they were parents of John Mallory b 1610 who married Mary Mosely.

Now. Does anyone know who the Gateway Ancestor is for John Mallory m Mary Mosely? Bree asked me to review that line for a Magna Carta badge, but none of the descendants in WikiTree left England as far as I can tell by the profiles.

Could the order of names be :

John 1610 & Mary Mosley

William 1577 & Alice Billingham

John 1556 & Anna Eure

William 1531 or 1525 & Ursula Gale

William 1498 & Jane Norton

Need some help connecting John Mallory MP (1610 - 1655). His father is William, great-grandson of Jane Norton and this Sir William.[1] There's missing generations in between. Can you help connect John?

update: merge completed; information from Malory-4's profile was incorporated into the profile for John's third wife (Elizabeth Reade-28), as it pertained mostly to her marriage to John & their son Christopher.

Malory-4 and Mallory-77 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! These are a match - but the mother is Margaret, not Elizabeth (and birth is c 1498, not the 1516 date based on John & Elizabeth's marriage date). Please merge. Thanks!

does anyone have sources for date & place of marriage and/or place of death? Those are the only things marked "citation needed" Thanks!

Hi Liz,

It has been a few years so, not sure if my new info is relevant. The U.S. International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 shows marriages. Why is it so hard to obtain a badge for 1500 and before? I have more sources for other profiles but, can not enter any information. Thanks, Joan

By definition, I am afraid that dataset does extend back to the period in which William would have married.
posted by Michael Cayley
Not only does "The U.S. International Marriage Records, 1560-1900" not cover the period of time in which William would have married (doc indicates that he died c 1547) this source is not considered reliable because the original source is unknown. (Ancestry.com indicates that the information in this database comes from a number of sources, including member trees, which makes it unacceptable for Pre-1500 profiles

update: March 19 - done (aside from the citations needed for a couple of bits still)

edit progress update (March 11): The next step for this profile is the completion through "after removals" step shown in the pdf at http://www.wikitree.com/photo/pdf/Magna_Carta_Team_Base_Camp
