John Mahoney was born between 1810 and 1815 in Currow, County Kerry, Ireland. His birth is listed as 1810 on his citizenship application^[1], and on the 1870 Census.^[2] HIs birth is calculated as 1815 from his tombstone.^[3]

He married Margaret Collins on 4 February 1845 in Currow, Kerry, Ireland.^{[4] [5]}

John and Mary had six children. Their oldest son, Dennis, was born in Ireland and was just a young boy when the family moved to America in 1852. They arrived at the port of Boston, and spent the next eight years moving, as evidenced by the births of their children:^[2]
