Biography

John Madison was born about 1625 in either England or St. Stephen's Parish, New Kent, Virginia.

He died before 16 April 1683, when his son, John Madison, Jr., acquired 450 acres in St. Stephens Parish, 300 acres of which was "part thereof formerly granted to John Madison, Sr., deceased by patent, March 18, 1662. . ." Ibid Patent Book 7 Page 246.[1].

Although not proven, some have theorized that John Madison, Sr. might have been the son of Captain Isaac Madyson who came to Jamestown, Virginia from England with John Smith in 1623.

Other genealogists speculate that John Madison (or Maddison), a ship's carpenter, arrived in Virginia from England in 1653. For paying the passage of twelve immigrants, including himself, he was granted six hundred acres of land through the "headright" system, a system which allowed anyone fifty acres of land for each immigrant whose passage from England he paid. Usually, those immigrants were indentured servants, who worked for a certain number of years in exchange for their passage.

Madison's land was on the Mattapony River, at a place called Mantapike, and for the next thirty years, he continued acquiring land through the "headright" system. By 1683, around the time of his death, his estate consisted of nineteen hundred acres on the York and Mattapony Rivers. [2]

Despite John Madison's unknown parentage, it is fairly certain that he is the 2nd Great Grandfather of James Madison, 4th President of the United States via his son (1) John Madison, (2) grandson Ambrose Madison and (3) great grandson James Madison[3] A digital image of the original chart pedigree drawn by President James Madison is shown here [http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/madison/images/vc1.jpg . A copy is also published in the Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine Volume III.

We know John's wife's first name was Mary from the 24 Feb 1659 deed where John and wife Mary sold the 600 acres of land patented by John in 1653. Any record of her surname has not surfaced.

Children

John and his wife Mary had two or more children:

  1. John Madison Jr. (abt.1658-bef.1726)
  2. Henry Madison (abt.1659-aft.1722)

Research Notes

The Bulk of the influential men in Virginia at the time, were composed of merchants from English cities and ship captains. To this class belonged the first John Madison, who in a patent dated Sept. 1682, calls himself 'Ship Carpenter " of "Saint Stephens Parish New Kent" where he sold 280 acres in Rappahannock county to Thomas Williamson. Hello Robin,

I am interested in Mary Madison Nicholson listed as a daughter of John Madison Sr above. Can you provide the sources that show that this Mary Madison Nicholson is a daughter of John Madison Sr.?

There are no sources that confirm the relationship. The only 3 children confirmed are in the biography. Unfortunately, there are numerous websites that indicate this relationship, including https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/68928998/john-madison

Online research indicates the gateway ancestor generation descendants, (President Madison) distributed the Shenandoah Valley to patented land owners around the turn of the century after arriving originally in Jamestown 15 years after the foundation. Possibly a great grandfather of James Jr and maybe a grandson of the first immigrant. Regards

The United States was formed 149 years after his birth, therefore he was not born in the United States, he was born and died in Virginia.

I cannot find any record for the daughter, Margaret, in fact, every family tree that has her attached to parents, has major flaws in the data. For the accuracy of the Presidential line, I would like to remove her as a daughter for John Madison. Robin Lee, US Presidents Project Leader

Is Marie his second wife? His first two children are a generation apart. 1642 would make him 17. Other children born 20 years later.
