Biography

"1870 Federal Census for Swannanoa Township, Buncombe County, NC lists Millington Lytle, age 80, and being blind."

This census also shows Emeline Lytle born 1837-1838 keeping house and she is listed as black. There is also Charles Lytle age 14, Sarah J Lytle age 12, Julia Lytle age 10, Christopher Lytle age 7 and Thomas Lytle, age 1 all listed as black and born in North Carolina, I don't know if the census taker listed them with the wrong race or if Emeline was a former slave that was freed in the 1860's , More research needs to be done to verify the relationship of Emeline Lytle to Millington Lytle.

Another hint that this census shows is that Millington's next door neighbor is James M Pitillo age 23 black male with what appears to be his wife June age 22 and children Joseph Pitillo age 4 and Caroline age 10 all black so they could have been related to Emeline Lytle who is living with Millington.

The 1850 Buncombe County Slave Census shows Millington Lytle as owning two male slaves one age 20 and the other age 19. The unusual name of Millington Lytle makes me believe this is the same Millington Lytle in the 1870 census. He must have been a fairly wealth man for that time because the 1870 census shows his property value as $ 65,500.00 and personal property value as $ 476. The averages during this era was around $ 500.00 property values and $ 200.00 personal property.
