Amos Hollingsworth Lynch helped start the Ohio Sentinel, publisher of the Columbus Call and Post and Columbus Post newspapers; as well as a community activist, Founder of the Martin Luther King Jr Annual Breakfast and member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

The life of newspaper publisher Amos H. Lynch Sr. was focused on uplifting the black community and ensuring opportunity for everyone. His death on Friday at age 90 diminishes all of central Ohio.

His newspapers offered a pulpit for the civil-rights movement, and he was a mentor to many who went on to great success and shaped the city of Columbus, Ohio.

Lynch started three papers in Columbus: the Ohio Sentinel, in 1949; the Call and Post, in 1962; and the Columbus Post, in 1995. He played a highly visible role in the black and white communities, saying he felt a duty to call for better job opportunities for blacks and integration into schools and housing.

He best summarized his life during his 2011 induction into the Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame, saying, “I learned early in my life that the written word is the most powerful tool for acquiring civil rights for all, and that newspapers were the best method for getting the word out.”

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Geraldine Anderson Lynch; beloved son, Amos H. Lynch, Jr; parents, Herston Lynch and Beadie Hollingsworth Lynch; and brothers, Herston Lynch, Jr, Frank Lynch; and sister, Ernestine Genevieve Lynch.

Amos leaves to cherish his memory his beloved daughter, Amosizinna Scott; beloved son, David (Stephanie) Lynch; brothers, Nelson Lynch; Orville Lynch and Gwendolyn Reese Lynch, David E. E. Lynch, Huey M. (Jeanette) Lynch; sister, Javlin Lynch Bonner; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
