August Lushington was the first African-American to earn a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (V.M.D.) from the University of Pennsyvlania.[1]
August was born in 1869 on the island of Trinidad in the British West Indies. He was the son of William Lushington and Mollie Dickerson.[2]
Augustus married Elizabeth Gravino around 1890; in 1910 they were living with 3 daughters in Lynchburg, Virginia where Augustus had a private veterinarian practice.[3]
After Augustus was widowed in 1929, he married Rosetta Peachy Mason in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1937.[2]
