Biography

Birth

Winthrop Lovejoy was born on 11 Sep 1786, the son of Jacob Lovejoy and Sarah (Rollins) Lovejoy.^[1] His birth is recorded on that date in the vital records of Fayette, Maine,^[2] which in 1786 was known as Sterling Plantation and was part of Lincoln County, Massachusetts.

Marriage

On 20 Feb 1808, the town clerk of Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts) certified "that an intention of marriage between Mr. Winthrop Lovejoy and Miss Hannah Wing both of Livermore hath been enteerd with me fourteen days prior to the Date hereof and has been published in Livermore as the Law Directs."^[3]

Death

No record has been found of the death of Winthrop Lovejoy. A gravestone at the Riverside Cemetery in Dixfield, Maine, is inscribed with the dates 1787-1858.^[4]

Research Note

In the 1850 census, the only Winthrop Lovejoy found in the index was living alone at Mexico, Maine, at the age of 84, with his birthplace shown as New Hampshire.^[5] That is probably not the Winthrop Lovejoy of this profile, although the age matches with the birth date. The Winthrop of this profile was probably born in Maine, and he is probably the Winthrop buried at Dixfield with a gravestone that shows his wife Hannah did not die until 1858.
