Biography

DO NOT CONFLATE THIS JOHN LONGLEY WITH JOHN LONGLEY OF LINCOLN, LINCOLNSHIRE (St. Margaret's-in-the-Close) who also had sons John and William. See research notes, below.

John Longley of Firsby, Lincolnshire, was the father of immigrant ancestor William Longley of Lynn, Massachusetts. John was deceased before 8 August 1638 (or 1639), when William wrote a letter of attorney to Thomas Meeke of Wynflete (Wainfleet), St. Mary, Lincolnshire, in which he asks Meeke to be his agent in selling lands inherited from his father, John Longley of Firsby, Lincolnshire.^[1][2] John's parents are not known and neither is his date and place of birth.

He is probably the John Langley or Longley who matriculated "sizar from Magdalene, Easter, 1605; B.A. 1609. Ord. deacon (Lincoln) Sept. 24, 1609; priest, Sept. 8, 1611. C. of Irby, Lincs., 1611. R. of Firsby, 1615". Administration of Effects at a Probate Court: "(Lincoln) 1639."^[3]

It may also be this John who was married 16 August 1611 at Irby-in-the-Marsh, Lincolnshire, to Anne Pearson.^[4] Irby-in-the-Marsh is only 1.4 miles from Firsby. John and Anne had children:

John died in Firsby before 8 August 1638, when his son requested a power of attorney to transfer John's probate assets.^[1][2]

Conflation: Lincoln Records

The following are records of sons of another John Longley baptized and/or buried at St. Margaret in the Close, Lincoln, Lincolnshire (there is no profile for John of Lincoln on WikiTree yet). Lincoln and Firsby are almost 40 miles apart and the John of this profile was having children in Firsby at the same time.

Unsourced Father

Unsourced father Edmund Longley was detached as there is no source cited to connect them. Edmund's profile says he is of Hertfordshire, while John is of Lincolnshire. A previous version of this profile said he was the son of Edmund Longley and Joane Longe and was born 18 December 1585 in Firsby, Lincolnshire, but no source was cited for this birth. Firsby parish records don't exist for that time period, so the date is likely an error.
