Biography

George Otis Linfield was born on 22 Jun 1835 in Avon, Norfolk, Massachusetts, New York. He was the son of Otis Linfield and Betsey Caswell.

First Marriage

George married [1st] Alice Darby Strang on 4 Jan 1861 in Stoughton, Norwalk, Massachusetts, where they both resided at the time. George (age 25) was identified as a bootmaker who was born at Randolph, Massachusetts to Otis Linfield and Betsey Caswell. Alice (age 18) was listed without occupation and as having been born in Duxbury to Nathaniel Strang. They were married by Rev George Winchester. The record specifies that this was a first marriage for the both of them.[1]

George and Alice had two children together: Elmer Hamilton Linfield (b. 1861) and Nathaniel Ernest Linfield (b. 1866). The children remained in Alice's care when George and Alice separated; ultimately, moving to California with her.

Second Marriage

George married [2nd] Mary (Morton) Whitten on 4 Nov 1875 in Brockton, Massachusetts. Mary and George resided in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts at this time, where George worked as a bootmaker. This was a second marriage for the both of them.[2] George remained with Mary for the rest of his life.

George passed away on 1 Feb 1908 in Avon, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[3] He was buried at the Avon Cemetery in Avon, Norfolk, Massachusetts.[4]

American Civil War

Union Soldier

George enlisted into service for the Union Army, at the age of 27, while he was residing in Stoughton, Massachusetts, working as a bootmaker. George was mustered into service on 3 Sep 1862 with the 40th MA Infantry, Co. F. He was mustered out of service on 16 Jun 1865 at Richmond, Virginia.

During his time in the military, George was promoted to Corporal. George was granted a pension for his service in 1907.[5]

Census Enumerations

1855 Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts George (age 20) resided with his parents (Otis and Betsey Linfield) at this time. George was working as a bootmaker, just like his father.[6]
1865 Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts George was enumerated with his first wife, Alice (Strang) Linfield, and their son, Elmer Linfield (age 4). George worked as a bootmaker at this time. George reported that he was born in Randolph, Massachusetts and Alice was born on Prince Edward's Island, Nova Scotia.[7]
1870 Randolph, Norfolk, Massachusetts George was staying with his future wife, Mary (Morton) Whitten and her husband, William Whitten, this enumeration. George worked with William at a boot factory.[8]
1880 Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts George continued to work as a bootmaker in a boot and shoe shop. It was reported that he and his father were born in Massachusetts, and his mother was born in Maine. His wife, Mary (Morton) Linfield; and her son, Orrin Whitten; and her grandson, Leo Whitten; as well as her aunt, Mary Caswell, resided in George's household at the time of this enumeration.[9]
1900 Avon, Norfolk, Massachusetts George and Mary (Morton) Linfield resided on East Spring Street in Avon, Norwalk, Massachusetts. Neither were listed with occupation. Mary's son, Isaac Whitten, and her grandchildren, Gertrude and Frank Whitten, resided with them at this time. [10]
