I have done a lot of work on ancestry.com including verifying people in tree with numerous DNA profiles. Eventually, I hope to move my tree information from Ancestry to WikiTree.

Hello, Ronald,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

I wanted to ask you about "coordinating" with others. Example: my ancestor John Lewis (b 1698/9 in Malden, MA) and his wife Martha were misidentified with another John Lewis (born 1694 in Farmington, CT) and his wife Martha Mills aka Denton. The confusion runs deep. My John and Martha had 9 children. John and his second wife Bathsheba Fuller had at least another 5 children. So, any changes will involve a lot of people. Some of the profiles have more than one profile manager. Is there someone who I could explain this to and get direction how to proceed? Note: it was my yDNA research that first identified the confusion of the two John Lewises.

Thanks, Ron Lewis

Hi Ronald,

If the profiles in question have profile managers, please email them to explain the problem and resolve. If they do not currently have managers, please provide the URLs of the profiles so that I can advise the correct project to work with you to resolve the problems. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Hi Ronald

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

I am new to wikitree. I have done a lot of work on ancestry.com. I manage of have access to results of 20 AncestryDNA profiles. My dad has done yDNA (Big Y) and a coordinate our Lewis yDNA match group. I am interested in adding information but I would like to keep profiles for living people private including myself. Where do I start??? Note: I descend from

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lewis-25065 There isn't much right about him.

Thanks for any help that would get me off the ground and comfortable about doing so. I guess another question is how DNA information is handled. Do I just note connections or do people need to update their actual DNA data?

Thanks, Ron Lewis

Ronald,

You asked for help answering your question about adding DNA for your relative. In order to meet the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) consent requirements, DNA can only be added by the person themselves if they are living. See the GDPR FAQ for more information on how the GDPR affected WikiTree when it was implemented in 2018.

Two sections in that FAQ will provide the information you need to:

Section 7 - Help:GDPR_FAQ#How_can_I_invite_my_relative_to_WikiTree_so_they_can_add_back_their_DNA_test_information.3F

Help:GDPR_FAQ#What_if_my_relative_isn.27t_interested_in_genealogy.3F

The third link I would suggest would be it item Categories in the right menu under FIND. Look for DNA

Please do let me know if you have any other questions about how WikiTree works, even if they seem minor. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back to me, but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier. We are always here to help.
