Biography

Noah Miller Lewis was born about 1804 in Fort Lewis, Bath, Virginia. He was the son of John Lewis and Rachel Miller.

Noah married Elizabeth Mossbarger on January 13, 1825, in Hardin County, Kentucky.^[1][2] They are known to have had eight children - William Sidney, Catherine Ann, Charles, Jacob Theodore, Andrew Jackson, Samuel, Mary Elizabeth, and John Henry. (See Notes)|

In 1830 and 1840, Noah and Elizabeth were farming in Hardin County, Kentucky, in 1830 with a household that included 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-9, and 1 female under , and in 1840, including 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-9, 2 males 10-14, 1 female under 5, and 1 female 10-14.^[3][4] In 1850, the couple and their children were farming in Hardin County, Kentucky.^[5]

Elizabeth died in 1855. In 1860, it appears that Noah was living with children in Beat, Cherokee, Texas.^[6] (See Notes)

The date and place of his death are not known with certainty, but likely occurred in Texas after 1860 (if the 1860 Census record is correct).

Notes

• Some Ancestry trees include several other children - Noah (b. 1831) and Francis (b. 1844) but there is no separate evidence for them, so perhaps these were children who died young.
• The 1860 Census record is confusing, and may not be for Noah. On the one hand, it seems to include him (at age 60, approximately correct) and a son John H., age 18, that matches his son (and who continues to live in Texas and dies there, with a Find a Grave that references his parents). On the other hand, it is not clear who the head of household is, appears to be "J.T. Lewis", age 30, which does not match any of his known children.
