Biography

Isaac was born in 1822 in Lixheim, Lorraine, France.

In 1846, Isaac immigrated the United States, settling first in New Orleans, before moving on to California in 1850, where he opened up a dry goods business. Later, in 1860, he established the firm of Livingston & Co., a wholesale liquor dealership.

Isaac was married twice and had ten children: four sons and six daughters. In 1860, he was residing in San Francisco with his first wife, Harriet, and their three children: Adelaide (age 6), Isadore (age 4), and Maurice (age 2). Also residing with the couple were Isaac's younger brother, Daniel, and a 21-year-old named Paulena Cerf, from France, whose relationship to the family is unclear.^[1] [Note: Isaac and Harriet's eldest daughter, Adelaide, is said to have been born in France about 1854 - well after Isaac is said to have moved to the United States. This could simply be an error in the records, but it is also possible that Adelaide could have been Harriet's child from a prior relationship and that she was , thus, actually Isaac step-daughter.

By 1870, Isaac had married his second wife, Mary. They were then living in San Francisco with their six children: Adelia (age 16), Isadore (age 14), Myer (age 12), Rebecca (age 9), Henrietta (age 4), and Helen (age 1). At the time he owned real estate valued at $10,000 with an additional personal estate valued at $5,000.^[2]

In 1880, Isaac and Melanie were resining at 617 Green Street n San Francisco with eight of their children, Isidore (age 24), Meyer (age 22), Rebecca (age 19), Henrietta (age 17), Helen (age 11), Fernand (age 9), Alfred (age 8) and Hortense (age 5). ^[3] Issac's tenth child, Jeanne, was born in 1882.

Isaac was a member of the Bay City Lodge I.O.O.F. and the order of B'nai B'rtih.

Isaac passed away in 1885 at age 63, following a long and painful illness.
