Biography

Olivier was born about 1734. He was the son of Jacques Léger and Anne-Marie Amireau. [1]

In 1752, his widowed mother was residing at Petcoudiac (in present-day New Brunswick) with 6 children as shown in the Acadian census that year. The children were not named in the census but considering Olivier's age at the time and his date of marriage in 1758, it is likely that he was one of the 4 boys recorded. [2][3]

He married Marie-Josèphe Hébert (Jean & Isabelle Bourque) about 1758 in Acadie. [1]

During the Great Upheaval, they found refuge at Camp d'Espérance, Miramichi, which was established at the end of the summer of 1756 to protect from famine and from the roundups of the British soldiers the approximately 1250 Acadians who fled there. [4] Also there were Olivier's mother, his brothers Jean-Baptiste, Joseph, Paul, Pierre-Jacques, and Pierre dit Pierrot as well as his sister Anne and their respective families. Olivier and Marie-Josèphe were refugees at Caraquet in July 1761[5] with one son and in another census taken later that year with 2 children. [6] There is a note in the margin of the census that they were among 157 people that were left in Caraquet for lack of vessels to take them away. Olivier later moved a bit further up north, to Baie des Chaleurs, Bonaventure, where he was recorded on a census in 1765 as owner of a house with 2 sons over 15 years of age, and a younger son. However, no wife or daughters were listed.[7]

Olivier finally settled in Caraquet where he passed away on 20 June 1818.[1]
