Biography

Volga German
Jacob Lebsack was a Volga German.

The Alberta local history book, Cleverville, Champion, 1905-1970 nicely summarizes the early history of the Lebsack family in North America:

Jacob Lebsack and Maria Krieger were married in Brunnental, Russia on September 15, 1903. Mr. Lebsack served in the Russian Army from 1903-1908. One child was born in Russia. In 1908 the family immigrated to Otis, Kansas and then moved to Lingley, Wyoming in 1910. Five children were born while in the United States. In 1918, the family moved to the Champion, Alberta district. Three more children arrived to complete this family unit.
The Lebsack family lived on the S.W. 7-15-21 when they first arrived in the Champion district. The children attended the Sanderson school. Their church was conducted from the homes by the Lutheran church.
For a few years the family lived in the Vulcan-East district on the Porter Noyes farm but returned to the Champion district and the Alex McLaughlin farm and in 1924, they purchased the Charlie Beaubien farm where they lived until 1948 when they retired to live in Calgary.[1]

Jacob and his family likely went to Otis, Kansas, because there were other Lebsacks living there. (See Research Notes below.) For some reason the family moved to Wyoming before they followed brother Conrad Lebsack to Champion, Alberta. There were 17 years of rented farms before they acquired their own spread.

In 1948 Jacob and his wife moved to Calgary although they do not show up in the online Henderson Directories until 1953. They lived in the Bridgeland-Riverside District at 427 - 11th Street N.E. They would have been close to Jacob's brother Conrad and German churches and businesses. But when the couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in 1969, they were living at the Brentwood Nursing Home.[2]

When Jacob died in 1971, he was at the North Bethany Auxiliary Hospital. He is buried at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Research Notes

There were many Lebsacks who had settled in Kansas. Jacob's relation might have been Heinrich L Lebsack (1865-1929) who was living in Pleasantdale in the 1920's. [3]
