Biography

Volga German
Maria (Krieger) Lebsack was a Volga German.

According to the informative family history found in Cleverville, Champion, 1905-1970, which can be found on-line, Maria's maiden name was Krieger and she married Jacob Lebsack on 15 September 1903. [1] Only one child was born in Russia, perhaps because Jacob had joined the Russian Army for several years.

On 16 November 1907 the Lebsack family left Bremen on the S. S. Grosser Kurfurst and arrived at New York on 26 November 1907. [2] The manifest indicates they were going to Otis, Kansas, to work for a Heinrich Lobsack. Heinrich might have been Heinrich Lebsack (1865-1929)[3] although it is difficult to be certain since there were so many Lebsacks living in Otis at the time.

The 1910 U.S. census shows the Lebsack family on a farm in Pleasantdale, Otis, Kansas. Two more children had been born in the United States[4] After Kansas, the family spent some time in Lingle, Wyoming (see Research Notes below) before moving north to Champion, Alberta, in 1918 where Jacob's brother Conrad had already settled. [5]

The family lived on several different rented farms before they acquired a permanent residence in Harmony, next to Jacob's brother, Conrad. [6] Conrad and Jacob's sister, Marie Schauerman, also settled in the area.

Marie and Jacob had the following children (their birthplaces help track the family's trajectory):

Mary Lebsack (1904, b. Russia - d. 1951, Ft. St. John, AB) m. Lee Jay Smith
Samuel Lebsack (b. 1908, Otis, Kansas - d. 1977, Calgary, AB)
Minnie Lebsack (b. 1910, Otis, Kansas - d. 1997, Calgary, AB) m. Alexander Befus
Freda Lebsack (b. 1911, Otis Kansas - d. Langley, B.C.) m. Adolph A. Anhorn
Benjamin Lebsack (1913-1984) b. Lingle, Wyoming - d. 1984, Kelowna, B.C.)
Jacob Lebsack (1916, b. Lingle, Wyoming - d. 1981, Red Deer, AB) m. Florence Mary Hanson
Alvina Lebsack (1918, b. Champion, AB - d. 1978, Vulcan, AB) m. Rudolph Graff
David Lebsack (1920, b. Lomand, AB - d. 1970, Vulcan, AB) m. Nora Kranzler
Hannah Lebsack (1923, b. Lomand, AB - d. 2009, Pt. Moody, B.C.) m. Clifford Clifton Ohlhauser

Around 1948 or so, the Lebsacks retired and moved to Calgary. The lived close to Conrad and his family in the district of Bridgeland-Riverside which had a large population of Germans from Russia. Their address was 427 - 11th St. N.E.

The Lebsack's family history indicates that Maria and Jacob were living at the Brentwood Nursing Home when they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on 15 September 1969.[7] Jacob died in 1971, Marie in 1973. They are buried at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.[8]
