Biography

Emma Alice Layman, the daughter of Thomas Layman and his wife, Susanna Gill, was born 31 July 1854 and baptised at St George the Martyr, Southwark on 23 October 1854. [1] She has not yet been found in the 1861 Census but by 1871 she was working as a governess at South Bersted in Sussex, in a school run by Frances Wheeler.

Emma married Jesse Lambly Thomas at St John, Deptford on 13 November 1880. [2] The marriage was registered at Greenwich. [3] By the time of the Census, Alice and Jesse had their own home but his parents, Jesse and Letitia were living with them. [4] Although the parents were both still alive in 1891 they were living elsewhere and Jesse and Emma were living at 6 Glendale Rd with their children and Jesse's sister, Mary.

Jesse died 14 June at 78 Shooters Hill Rd., Blackheath. His estate valued at £2500 9s 3d was probated to Emma, who was then of 12 North Park Eltham, on 19 August. [5]

Emma lived on until 2 September 1950 when she died at Eltham. Her estate was valued at £4247 15s and probate was granted to Ethel Matilda Laetitia Thomas, her daughter. [6]
