One-time Wimbledon winner and 5-times losing finalist (a joint-record that still stands). He reached the Wimbledon gentleman's singles tennis final in 1880 and lost in 4 sets to Rev John Thorneycroft Hartley. Between 1884 and 1888 he appeared in every final, losing the first three to William Renshaw before beating his brother Ernest Renshaw in 1887. He lost to Ernest in 1888. He was also an uncle of the actor Peter Lawford.
Herbert was born in 1851 in Paddington, just outside London. He was the eldest son of stockbroker Thomas Lawford and Janet Bruce. Herbert, child of Thomas Acland Lawford & Jessie Turing Lawford, was baptised on 4 July 1851 in Paddington, Middlesex, England.[1] Despite both he and his father being born in England, he claimed Scots ancestry and represented Scotland when he played tennis.
In the 1861 census Herbert (age 9), Stock Brokers Son, was the son of Thomas ... Lawford in Tonbridge, Kent, England.[2]

In the 1871 census Herbert (age 20), Brokers Clerk, was the son of Thos A Lawford in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.[3]
Herbert played his final Wimbledon in 1890, giving his second-round opponent a walk-over. After his tennis career ended he followed his father into the stockbroking industry. He married his young cousin (once removed), Edith Lawford, daughter of Alfred Chalmers Lawford and Elizabeth Scott.[4]
In the 1891 census Herbert (age 31), Stock Broker, was the married head of household in Wimbledon, Surrey, England.[5]

Herbert was in a probate record on 19 March 1903 in London, England, probably relating to the death of his brother Archibald.[7]
Herbert was in an obituary on 22 April 1925 in United Kingdom. Herbert died on 20 April 1925.[8] His estate passed probate on 5 September 1925 in Middlesex, England.[9][10]
He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006.
Originally entered with death in 1910 in Islington, a similar name. Removed the references for this as there is enough to prove this is the correct date.
