James LaRue Avery was an American actor and poet, best known for his role as Philip Banks in the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
James LaRue Lane, son of James LaRue Lane Sr. and Florence Avery, was born in 1945.[1]
At some point, he took his mother's maiden name, Avery.
Raised by a single mother, James earned his bachelor’s degree in drama and literature in 1976 from UC San Diego after serving in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969.
He died due to complications from heart surgery in 2013.[2][3] He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles, California.[4]
