Biography

Birth

John W. Lambert was born at Livermore, Maine, on 4 Jan 1838, the son of John Lambert and Elizabeth "Betsey" (Alexander) Lambert.[1]

Civil War Service

John W. Lambert was a private in Company B of the 25th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Identified as age 24 and born in Livermore, Maine, when he enlisted for nine months' service from Falmouth, Maine, on 1 Sep 1862. He was mustered in on 29 Sep 1862 and was mustered out with with the rest of his regiment on 10 Jul 1863 and received an honorable discharge.[2] The 25th Maine saw no combat but was used in garrison and picket duty in and around Washington, D. C., and all 20 fatalities in the regiment were due to sickness.[3]

Marriage

After mustering into service with his regiment, John W. Lambert married Mary J. Gammon, at Falmouth, Maine, on 11 Oct 1862.[4] Five days after the wedding, his regiment left for Washington, D. C.[3]

Residences and Child

In the 1870 Census, John W. Lambert is shown living at Falmouth, Maine, as a 32-year-old stone cuttter with Mary J, Lambert, 30, and Hellen A. Lambert, 2.[5] In the 1880 census, he was living at Deering, Maine, at age 42, and Mary J. Lambert, 40 is identified as his wife and Ellen A. Lambert, 12, as his daughter.[6] He was still at Deering when he was listed in the 1890 Union veterans' census.[7] In the 1880 Census, he is living in Portland, Maine, and shown as born in January 1838, Mary is shown as born in April 1840, and Ellen is shown as born in February 1868.[8]

Death

A FindAGrave memorial with no photo says that John W. Lambert died on 19 Oct 1826 at the age of 88 at is buried in Section O, Lot 166, Grave 2 of the Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, Maine.[9]
