He enlisted in the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment at Font du Lac (as a 43 year old labourer) on 15/2/1864 but was killed just three months later at the Battle of the Wilderness near Chancellorsville, Virginia on 5/5/1864 . A report from Gerry T Sarsfield, Captain 6th Wisconsin Regiment to “Dr Blaesh” dated April 14 from “Camp near Ahpranattor(?) Courthouse” states: “Sir, I have the honour to state that Thomas Lawler was a private and a member of my co 6th Wis Ret., that he was wounded May 5th 1864 and taken by the enemy to the field hospital in which place he died immediately after reaching the hospital.”
