Biography

Mary E. Knott was born in 1851 in Oneida County, New York. Census documents show that her father William Knott was born in England, and her mother Catherine was born in New York State; mother Catherine in one census document has her named spelled Catharina, which may indicate a German ancestry (many Palatine Germans in Upstate New York). At the age of 22 years, Mary married 24-year-old John R. Baxter (1848-1928) on 14 May 1873 in New York State, and they were the parents of about seven children:
