Research Notes

Thomas Knibb, son of Samuel & Sarah (Browne) Knibb, was born in Henrico County in 1691 (died 1747), according to one online tree, which has Anne Browne as his second wife and mother of Anne Knibb born 1712 (no mention of who the mother was of Obedience and Mary).[4]

In 1679, Samuel Knibb was listed among the "tythables" at Bermuda Hundred, as was "George Browninge".[5]

Lineage

The profile for Samuel Knibb outlines family connections based on transcribed records in The Edward Pleasants Valentine pagers as follows:
  1. Solomon Knibb and Katherine Morris -> son Samuel Knibb
  2. Samuel Knibb married
    1. Janet Morgan (c1655) -> son Samuel Knibb, Jr. (born c1660)
    2. Sarah Francis Browne, the daughter of Rev. Browne and Sarah Cocke Browne Woodson -> children of Samuel Knibb and Sarah (Browne) Knibb are named in their maternal grandmother's 24 February 1701/2 will (proved 1 November 1704): "Grandson John Knibbs... Grandson Soll Knibb... Grandson Thomas Knibb" (daughter Sarah is not named; Samuel and Solomon Knibb are two of the securities).

As described in Thomas's will:[3]
  • First I devise and bequeth to my daughter, Anne Hatcher fifty acres of land where she now liveth be the same more or less as it is bounded and after the Decease of my daughter Anne and her husband Jamstone Hatcher I give the aforesaid fifty acres of land to his son, my grandson Thomas Hatcher to him the said Thomas Hatcher and to his heirs forever the above said land Bounded as followeth Beginning on the Northside my clear ground at a corner Black Oak standing in the path going down to the wall as it is marked out so down James River to Tanners line so up the P Tanners line to my spring run thence up the P Spring run to a corner pine standing on the brow of the hill thence to an Elbow Chestnut tree thence as it is marked out to a corner Black oak the place begun at,
  • Secondly all the remainder part of my land Where James River joining my son in Law Jamstone Hatcher buildings houses orchards & with all the appurtenances hereunto...
  • Thirdly I give to my loving wife Anne Knibb one hundred acres of land lying in Henrico County at Sapony the Plantation and land Where William CUTTS now liveth being one half of the tract of two hundred acres taken up wth Mr. Joseph W. WILKINSON to her and to her Heirs forever I also give the other one hundred acres of my land at Sapony joining Benjamin BRANCH to my grandson Jamstone Hatcher to him and his heirs forever.
The online tree that posted the transcription of his will also posted the following from Cavaliers and Pioneers -

  • John Tillotson. 400 acs. Henrico Co. crossing several Brs. of Lower Sappony Cr., crossing the Beaver Pond br. of Wintopock twice; adj. John Worsham, Thomas Knibb, Francis Eppes, the sd Tillotson & John Rud Senr.; 5 June 1746, p 65. L2.[7]
And this information, from John Pritchett's site, The Virginians:[8]
Thomas Knibb (-1747), "who was the son not yet baptized when his father made his will, paid taxes on two levies and 250 acres in Henrico County in 1736. Thomas was married to Ann in 1744 when she relinquished her dower right in the land he sold to William Baugh Jr. With Baugh they sold 104 acres to William Pride 18 March 1744/5."

Slaves Named in Will

Fourthly I desire that my wife Anne shall have the use and priviledge of Plantation where now live and what negros I am now possessed with During her natural life and after her decease I give my Negro girl Fany to my daughter Obedience Knibb I also give my Negro man Abraham to my daughter Mary Knibb and one feather bed and furniture thereunto belonging.[3]
