On Findagrave, John has a first wife, Catherine Davis who died 17 Apr 1870 at age 32. This conflicts with the marriage of John and Mary Appleman which occurred on 1 Feb 1870 (from History of Columbia and Montour Counties).

Catherine (Davis) Kline (1838-1870) was married to John Kline (abt.1835-), son of Elijah Kline and Mary Stiles. They are on the 1860 census together with their son Lewis C Kline 7 months old. Then in 1870 , John is widowed with five children.
