John was born in 1840. He is the son of Abraham Jackson Kline and Mary Mott McHenry. He is buried in the Benton Cemetery, Benton, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, USA.[1]
John married Mary Elizabeth Appleman on 1 Feb 1870 in Columbia, Pennsylvania, USA. They had four children together.
John served in the Civil War, enlisting on Jan 01, 1862, mustered in as Private, Co. F, 2nd Heavy Artillery, Pennsylvania Infantry, in Philadelphia, PA. He was mustered out as First Lieutenant on Jan 29, 1866 at City Point, Virginia. His company joined Grant's army at Cold Harbor and operated with him until the close of the war, then he came home.[2]

Catherine (Davis) Kline (1838-1870) was married to John Kline (abt.1835-), son of Elijah Kline and Mary Stiles. They are on the 1860 census together with their son Lewis C Kline 7 months old. Then in 1870 , John is widowed with five children.
