Biography

Sarah Kitchen was born around 1657 in England.[1] She was the daughter of Thomas Kitchen and his first wife, not Mary Mace, whom he only married in 1685.

Sarah Kitchen emigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her father, Thomas Kitchen, in 1683. There she first married a man named John Goodwin on May 3, 1684.[2] He must have died shortly after their wedding as no children were mentioned and she remarried just 3 years later.

Sarah Kitchen married as her 2nd husband George Smedley b: 1656 in Derbyshire, England. They married in 1687 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after both had emigrated to the Quaker-led colony. This marriage strengthens the supposition by some genealogists that Thomas Kitchen also came from Derbyshire, England.

Marriage Date: April 24, 1687 in Friends Meeting, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[3]

  1. She could not have been born in Top Twp., Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1657 because that place was only founded after 1682 when William Penn became Proprietor of the English colony of Pennsylvania. The area was under Swedish and/or Dutch control in 1657.

FamilySearch has a son without a name being born and death in 1685. This would have been with her first husband. No records to confirm.
