Current Work

Three sons of this James--Henry, John and Joseph--have often been shown, unproven, as men so named who immigrated to New England and were known of Boston and Dedham. Another, younger, relative, Henry Kingsbury, immigrant to Ipswich and Haverhill, has also been associated as some relation to James Kingsbury of Boxford.

In his articles about the immigrant Henry Kingsbury of Assington and Boston (1995)[1] and John Kingsbury of Dedham (2005),[2] Robert Charles Anderson believed there was a close relationship between the immigrant Kingsbury men, but could not further substaniate that relationship with specificity.

An article[3] by Melinde Lutz Byrne and John Edward Hardy in the Spring 2021 New England Historical and Genealogical Register proposes the three Kingsbury immigrants--Henry of Assington and Boston (d. after 1636), John (d. Dedham) and Joseph (d. Dedham) are the sons of this James Kingsbury. The article further established relationships between these three older Kingsbury men and the fourth immigrant, Henry Kingsbury of Ipswich and Haverhill (b. 1615).

Various work is underway currently by WikiTree collaborators to access the 2021 article findings and merge, as appropriate, the immigrant profiles with those now shown as James' sons. See also, Kingsbury immigrants--Pending update as to Origins.

Family

James Kingsbury married at Boxford, 22 October 1584, Anne Francis,[11] whose ancestry is not known. (James was baptized 1562; thus probably about 22 at the time of his marriage to Ann.) Their named children, probably born Boxford, are known mostly from James' 1622 will.[12] (Baptismal records of only two or three of their children appear in the Boxford register.)

1. James Kingsbury, born say 1586; married Boxford, 8 February 1614/5, Joane Hogge;[13] as "James Kingsberie," he was listed first in his father's 1622 will, together with three of his children--James, Anne and Bridget.
2 Henry Kingsbury,[14] born say 1588,[15] married (1) Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk, 5 December 1613, Jane Waryn;[16] married (2) Assington, Suffolk, 18 May 1621, the widow Margaret Alabaster.[17] As "Henrie Kingsberie," he is listed second in his father's will, together with one son of the same name.
3. John Kingsbury,[18] baptized in Boxford, 25 May 1595 ("Jo: Kingsburye Sonne of James Kingsburye & Anna his wyffe");[19] he is listed third in his father's will.
4. Sara Kingsbury, baptized in Boxford, 5 May 1597 ("Sarra Kingsburye daughtr of James Kingsburye & Anne his wyffe");[20] married say 1617, John French. Sara is listed fourth in her father's will; John French is also mentioned, as is their son, James French.
5. Elizabeth Kingsbury, born say 1599, living unmarried in 1622, as "Elizabeth Kingsberie," she was listed fifth in her father's will; no further record.[21]
6. Joseph Kingsbury, born say 1601; as "Joseph Kingsberie" he was listed sixth in his fathers will, apparently then at least 21 years of age.
7. Thomas Kingsbury, born say 1603 as "Thomas Kingsberie," he was listed seventh in his father's 1622 will, then not yet 21 years of age.
8. Alyce (Alice) Kingsbury, born say 1605, living unmarried in 1622, listed last as "Alyce" in her father's will and did not receive anything; no further record.[22] She is possibly the "Anne Kinsbery" baptized in Boxford, 21 October 1605, daughter of "James Kinsbery."[23]

Gene, would you be so kind as to incorporate some of the relevant portions, and sources, from your free-space page to this profile, please? In preparing to do the merge, it appears unclear which material belongs and/doesn't, or which is replaced by your page, based on the 2021 research. Thanks.

Have proposed an unmerged match between this profile, Unknown Kingsbury, father of immigrants John Kingsbury and his known brother Joseph Kingsbury, and James Kingsbury, d. 1622, Boxford.

Basis for the proposed merge is presented in some detail at Update as to Origins.

Assuming the proposed changes to Henry Kingsbury are accepted, then the man who immigrated aboard the Talbot will become the son of James and Ann. (See G2G as "Comments on Henry Kingsbury.")

We should then re-evaluate and/or update the "Disambiguation" section of this profile, ala, if Henry is proven sufficiently for him to be linked as a son, then how far off are we as to the brothers John and Joseph? --Gene.
