Biography

Royal Standard of Ireland 18th Century
1776 Project
Private Robert King II served with Washington District Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

Birth: 1750, Ireland Death: Dec. 13, 1826 Anderson County South Carolina, USA

Robert King Jr. emigrated to America from Ireland in 1770 with his young wife Tabitha, his father and mother and two uncles. He settled near this cemetery in 1772. Father of 23 children, 21 of whom lived to be grown. He was the founder of the King family in this section and fought in the Revolutionary War. He was the father-in-law of Rev. Moses Holland, the founder of the Baptist Church and Saluda Baptist Association. He was also the father of Rev. Robert King, an early Baptist minister in this section. Monument erected by his only surviving grandson in 1929, John Macky King.

From the memoirs of William James King King-15586: "Now as to Grandfather (Robert Jr.) King, he was low of stature, average weight 190 to 210 lbs., his limbs and body almost round and tapering, physically a powerful man and quite a bully in his day. Grandmother was Irish to the core. Her maiden name was Dolby, related to the Pools. I met the Pool family in 1870 & 71 near Statesville, NC. They were evidently the same family. The older ones had a sister that married a King either in the Old Country, as they all first and last came from Ireland to North America and landed at what is now, or near, Baltimore, MD, or somewhere on the Chesapeake Bay. The same names run in the Pool family as in the Kings- Joe and Robert."

Robert Jr. and Tabitha were parents of twenty-three children; nineteen children were seated at the table at one time. All sons stayed in the Belton area and raised families; one son, William, never married. Robert Jr. fought in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of King's Mountain.

National D.A.R. record 497660 for Mrs. Henry H. Lowe (Mary Lee King), Belton, SC quotes:

"Robert King, Pvt. at Battle of King's Mountain under Captain Bledsoe."

A quote from the Draper Collection of manuscripts of Tennessee and King’s Mountain Papers on microfilm at the University of South Carolina Library, Vol. 11DD16d:

"Provision return for three men." Signed by Captain Issac Bledsoe. It is stated that Captain Bledsoe was in Col. Shelby's Regiment.'

Tabitha died 14 May, 1815; Robert King died 13 Dec. 1826. They are both buried at the King Graveyard 200 yards of where they built their home. (See map and pictures of gravesite).
